Over the past 80 yrs, we have gradually become more and more reliant on food, goods, energy and many services that come from great distances to supply our basic needs. This type of dependency uses more energy, costs more, and takes money away from our community. If we can utilize goods and services offered right here in our huge County, the better off we will be in the long run. Everyone has something to offer.
Mount Shasta has recently become an official “Transition Town” (the 18th in the US). This movement began in the UK in 2007 and has since grown tremendously internationally. It is all about “transitioning” to “relocalization”, and “community sustainability” and is becoming very popular across the US. Also, in these economically challenging times, people realize they need to come together in a cooperative way to make ends meet. And a local economy is the answer.
How It Works: Using The Exchange
We encourage everyone in Siskiyou County, CA to participate by offering a listing in your particular area of interest…your business, hobby, skills, service, new or used items etc…or even something you’re looking for. The more people that join in, the stronger and more diverse it will be. The process of entering or searching a listing is simple and user friendly
- Create a login name and password at the "Create an Account" link in the right column(Siskiyou County residents only please). By clicking this link you will be taken to the Registration Page. Fill out all required fields. Go to your e-mail inbox and click on the link to activate your account. Navigate to shastacommons and proceed to login in the inputboxes marked "username" and "password."
- Choose a section, then a category that pertains to your listing(under the "Exchange," "Forum" or "Events" link). Can’t find a category you’re looking for? Let us know and we’ll create one. You will see an option to make a post. On the Events page this is indicated by an icon to the right of the Heading.
- Write in your listing with a short description, your name, ph# and email
- Search the site to see what is being offered right here in your own backyard and start connecting with others doing the same, you’ll be amazed!
- When you find something, contact the person(s) and negotiate a price directly. You may find opportunities to do trades or partial trades too.
- For content other than Forum, Exchange, or Events listings, i.e: articles, please send as attachment with an e-mail message. Be clear and courteous!
- If you are having difficulty posting Events and creating Venues, or need help with imagery uploads, contact the administrator or leave a posting in the Community Forum so others may benefit from the dialogue. This applies to all the Sections.
- Leave honest feedback of your experience…so others will have an idea of what to expect. It’s an important part of this endeavor’s success.(a feedback link will be created, for now please use the Community Forum.)
If you know someone who could benefit from this site, but doesn’t use a computer, you may enter information on his/her behalf as long as you are given consent.
This service is being provided free of charge. If you have appreciation for it or have benefited from it in some way, please consider giving a donation to help cover costs for site maintenance and to assure its’ continued existence. There is considerable time involved in it’s design and upkeep. Thank you in advance for this user supported effort!
Our long-term goal is to create an alternative, time based electronic currency which will make transactions more flexible and independent from the US dollar. We’ll keep you posted with the progress.
Cheers!
